Special guests, special recognition at BOE meeting.

Brad Sanders won the first boys and girls tennis state titles in school history.


As chair Kim Wright said in welcoming everyone to Tuesday night's Board of Education meeting, there were some special guests in attendance. One was Millie Smith Oliver. She was named District Teacher of the Year at last year's end of year convocation. She received a Chromebook and Subway gift card.

Last year was a historic year for BCHS athletics. They won the GADA Director's Cup for the first time in school history for having the most points of all schools in AA. Bleckley also won the first girls sports Director's Cup.

Sports responsible for both cups were: Boys and Girls Cross Country- region champion, state champion. Softball- region runner up, second round of state. Competition cheerleading- region runner up, tenth at state. Girls basketball- region champion, elite eight. Boys basketball- third in region. Girls soccer- region runner up.

Baseball- region champion, elite eight. Boys and Girls tennis- region champons, state champions. Boys track- region champions, state runner up. Girls golf- region champion, tied for fourth at state. Boys golf- region runner up.

The region runner up for girls soccer under head coach Wesley Odom was the first in school history.


In speaking about last year's success, Superintendent Steve Smith said while there were trophies to mark the accomplishments, the coachers didn't recognied. So the board wanted to recognize all the coaches for their contributions. Not all coaches were able to attend, but each received (or will receive) a plaque of appreciation as well as a Subway gift card.

Janice Bryan resigned as Lady Royals head softball coach last spring. In her final three seasons, the team reached the second round of state all three years.


Smith said he knew the coaches didn't do it for the money, but because they loved working with kids. He said they appreciated all they did.

Teresa Gray was named Lady Royals head softball coach last spring.


Jenny Manning led the girls basketball team to the best finish in BCHS history.


Benjy Rogers was athletic director and seen as the "face of Bleckley County" for many years.
