Thursday night wrapped up fall and winter sports for 2017-18 at BCMS with an awards banquet for the game squad cheerleaders and both basketball teams. As was the case last year, game squad cheerleaders attended both football and basketball games.

Brown presented the Assistant Coach's Award to Paola Palapayon.

Three awards were presented by coaches Becky Smith and Liz Brown. Ashlynne Corbin was Scholar Athlete for having the highest GPA. Brown presented the Assistant Coach’s Award to Paola Palapayon. Smith gave the Coach’s Award to Shianna Harden.

Presenting next were coaches Faith and Rich Hulsey for the Lady Barons basketball team. This season saw the Lady Barons repeat as MGMSA champions. Head coach Faith Hulsey said they put an emphasis on team during the season, including not having individual scorers announced during morning announcements. She said it helped them to grow as a family during the season.

The entire team and managers received the same items including medals and T-Shirts because both coaches believed all were important. Faith Hulsey said Jalexia Taylor’s medal had the words “MVP” written on the back and added she thought the team would agree. Taylor, Millie Hulsey, and Kyla Durham were given extra gifts for being the only three-year members of the squad.

Defensive Player of the Year Amad Jenkins with assistant coach Dusty Jones.

Boys first-year head coach Garrett Collins noted they had several close calls, including four losses by two points. Highlight wins included a home victory against this year’s boys champion Dublin as well as a blowout of longtime rival West Laurens. Collins said his commitment to man to man defense, which resulted in them giving up about 33 points a game, would continue.

Trallis Tharpe received the "Iron Man" award for not missing games and practices.

Following certificate presentations, specific awards were as follows. Offensive Player of the Year- Jhamir Marshall. Outstanding Defensive POTY- Amad Jenkins. “Iron Man” award- Trallis Tharpe. Captain’s Award- Tavares Mays. Newcomer Award- Omari Jackson. Co-winners of the Most Improved award went to Antonio Lawson and Marquez Brown.

Collins mentioned the low percentage of high school students who go on to play college basketball as a point of emphasis for maintaining grades before presenting the Scholar Athlete award. Receiving were Marshall (eighth grade), Mays (seventh grade), and Marcus Newson (sixth grade.)

As is often the case with awards banquets, the close saw players from both teams recognize their coaches with gifts. Congratulations to all award winners.
