As they’ve done for the past several years, BCHS finished the preseason with a scrimmage against West Laurens. No official score was kept. Special teams play was limited, kickoffs and punts, but no returns.

Varsity played about two and a half quarters, followed by second string players, then JV players finished up the fourth. Start time was delayed by 30 minutes due to lightning and a light but steady rain fell for much of the night.

Unlike the spring scrimmage against Howard that saw both first team offenses reach the endzone numerous times, defense dominated.

The Raider first string connected on a touchdown pass with 6:24 left in the first quarter. Bleckley’s offense didn’t cross over midfield until the second on an Arkenzio Hayes interception return. He returned it to the 24 but a penalty post interception moved the ball back to the 36. The drive stalled.

Late in the first half, West Lauren started on the Royal 39 following a short punt. An apparent touchdown pass was wiped out by a holding penalty. Willie Harris’ quarterback sack further backed up the Raiders, as they would be prevented from scoring. Second string defensive players got a stop in the third, \ending a WL drive at the BC 37. The Raiders tried a 52-yard field goal that fell well short.

Early in the fourth, Dominic Sasser hit a leaping Terrance Rozier in the corner of the endzone for a touchdown. In the JV portion, West Laurens scored but the Royal defense prevented the conversion. The regular season kicks off August 17 against longtime rival Hawkinsville at Bobby Gentry Stadium. Kickoff is 7:30 pm.
