The Royal offense struggled to get on track during last week’s scrimmage at West Laurens in part due to wet conditions. Skies were clear Friday night as BCHS opened the regular season at Hawkinsville. It was a virtual home game, as the visitor’s side overflowed with purple and gold as well as the student section dressed in white for the “white out.” With no rain to contend with, the Royal offense unloaded early en route to an easy win.

DeAndre Pitts pulled this catch in.

Nykeem Farrow broke free on the Royals second possession, going 35 yards to the end zone with 6:59 left in the first. An attempted two-point conversion failed. It was third and goal from the eight with 1:11 left when Marcus Brown went up between two Red Devil defenders and came down in the end zone. Though another conversion attempt failed, BC led 12-0. Early in the second, Ty Williams picked off a Hawkinsville pass, returning it to the Red Devil 45.

Zach Lassiter connected with Brown again, this time on a 38-yard touchdown strike with 8:16 remaining. The point after failed but Bleckley was now up 18-0. Another turnover set up the Royals next score. Hawkinsville’s attempt to go for it on fourth and short resulted in a fumble recovered by BC on their own 40. Lassiter connected with Farrow on a 46-yard catch and run. The kick was good, and Bleckley led 25-0 with 3:20 left.

Following a defensive stop, the Royals got the ball back in Red Devil territory. Farrow scored from a yard out with 43 seconds remaining as the lead grew to 32-0. Arkenzio Hayes picked off a pass to end the half. Hawkinsville finally got on the board in a third quarter that saw penalties called on both sides.

A touchdown run with 6:37 left broke the shutout but the point after was missed. Treg Corner connected on a 29-yard field goal with 22 seconds left. Hawkinsville drove to the Royal 16 in the fourth but didn’t score after missing a 33-yard attempt.

Late in the quarter, Dominic Sasser hit Jhamir Marshall for a 61-yard completion to the Red Devil 10. Patrick Taylor’s seven-yard touchdown run with 1:02 left capped the Royals 42-6 win.

Bryce Bailey runs past a defender.

The dry conditions clearly helped BCHS who put up 376 yards of total offense after not crossing the 50 until the second quarter during last week's scrimmage at West Laurens. Lassiter accounted for 194 of them, gong 12 of 21 with three touchdowns. Farrow accounted for all but four of the team’s rushing yards, going for 110 on 13 carries. Brown caught four passes for 79 yards. Bryce Bailey had six receptions for 50 yards.

Besides the interception, Hayes also had three solo tackles as part of a four tackle night. John Newbern also had four total tackles with six assists. Willie Chambers had three solo tackles, 3.5 overall. BCHS plays at Veterans High School August 24. Kickoff is 7:30 pm with the game taking place at Freedom Field.
