Friday was the first football meeting between BCHS and Veterans and the Royals first visit to Freedom Field. What started off as a very competitive game was derailed by Royal turnovers.

The BCHS Loyal Royals were there to cheer on the team.

Following a fumble recovery at the Royal one, Veterans scored with 9:06 left to go up 7-0. Though stopped on fourth and one from the Veterans 25 on their second possession, Zach Lassiter connected with Bryce Bailey on a 70-yard catch and run with 27 seconds left, tying the score. The Warhawks though retook the lead on a touchdown pass with 9:53 left in the second.

Fifty-one seconds later, Nykeem Farrow dashed 68 yards to again tie the score. Veterans though answered with a long run to go ahead with 7:01 remaining in the half.

The second Royal turnover, an interception, happened on BC’s next possession. Their drive stalled on BC’s 14, a 31-yard field goal attempt was blocked. But a touchdown run with 22 seconds left put the Warhawks up 28-14 at halftime.

Zach Lassiter played receiver in catching this touchdown pass.

It was the third quarter when things fell apart. A fumble recovered on the Royal 26 was converted into another Warhawk touchdown run with 8:49 left. BC’s next possession also ended with a fumble, recovered by Veterans on the Royal 25. They scored with 6:38 left, pushing the deficit to 42-14. Another turnover, this time an interception, ended a BC drive at the Warhawk 25.

The Warhawks faced a second and 42 in their own territory but got 21 yards. It was fourth and 16 on the Royal 35 when BC was flagged for being offsides. Veterans went for it and was successful. With 2:19 left in the third, Veterans scored again to go up 49-14. Bleckley put together one last good drive, complete with fourth down conversion to keep it going.

Brandon Acree, Caden Maxwell, and Isaiah Roberts team up to make a stop.

Bailey, already with a touchdown reception, tossed a three-yard touchdown pass to Zach Lassiter with 8:43 remaining in the game. It was the final score in a 49-21 loss.

Andrew Thompson caught this pass.

Farrow ran for 119 yards on 17 carries. Zach Lassiter was 14 of 20 for 210 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions. Marcus Brown had three receptions for 48 yards. Willie Harris had 12 tackles, two for loss. John Newbern had nine total tackles, Willie Chambers had eight. BCHS has their home opener against Telfair County August 31. Kickoff is 7:30 pm.
