It was another busy Board of Education meeting held Tuesday night. Two actions were taken in regard to the new primary school. Per the recommendation of Superintendent Steve Smith, execution of contracts for both the construction manager at-risk as well as architectural services will be delayed until after the ESPLOST referendum vote March 19.
Also delayed was discussion of the Vizitech virtual reality educational program. At the March 12 meeting, Gen. Stuart Rodeheaver will be in attendance to answer questions about it. A contract for landscaping services from Dixie Lawn and Landscaping was approved. According to meeting minutes, they were one of three vendors with at least one million dollars in liability insurance. The contract is $49,800 annually, $4,150 per month.
As part of his monthly update, Smith said the HVAC projects for the elementary and high schools continue to move forward and bid information should be out by the next meeting. Earlier in the meeting, the following students were recognized for being a part of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Team.
An addendum to the FY19 calendar was approved. With March 29 being the last day before spring break, it was made into a half day for students. BCHS cross country head coach Shelly Cranford addressed the board about plans to take both teams to a meet in Rhode Island. Cranford said savings as well as financial success of the state middle school cross country championship would fund the trip.
From the executive session, accepted was the resignation, with regret due to retirement, of teacher and BCHS One Act Play Assistant Director Penny Spivey. Porter Arnold was added as an unpaid community track coach.
