The last of middle school winter sports officially wrapped up Wednesday night at an awards ceremony for both the boys and girls basketball teams as well as game squad cheerleaders. Both basketball teams had first-year head coaches.

Most Improved Marcus Brown.

It was a historic first year for boys head coach Derrick Farrow. Along with assistant Antonio Farrow (another first year coach), he led the Barons to a 15-2 record, the best in school history. Though a poor fourth quarter cost them against Swainsboro in the MGMSAA title game, their runner up finish was the best in school history.

Gladiator Award winner T.J. Mays.

Farrow said he hoped the defeat would serve as motivation for returning players. He wished eighth graders good luck and challenged them to step up in high school. Awards were as follows. Scholar Athletes (90 or above GPA)- Kamari Mack, Tyler Wilcox, Marcus Newsome. Best Offense- Omari Jackson, Antonio Lawson. Hustle Award- Dytwon Ates.

Scholar Athletes Asia Thorpe, Lila Dykes, Shylexia Brown with head coach Tisha Ates.

Best Defense- Markeze Brown. Most Improved- Christian Newbern. Gladiator Award- TJ Mays. After winning two straight region titles, but losing several eighth graders, the Lady Barons finished third in the regular season. First year coach Tisha Ates said it was a pretty good season but honestly stated that internal drama kept them from going further.

Gladiator Award winner Ter'Nazia Elvine.

She said that would be corrected for the coming season. Lady Baron award winners were as follows. Scholar Athlete- Asia Thorpe, Lila Dykes, Shylexia Brown. Co-offensive Players of the Year- My’Jayla Stanley, Kristeria Stanley. Defensive Player of the Year- Ke’Myah Anderson. Hustle Award- Trinity Glover. Most Improved- Cadence Huff.
