Queens of the cheerleading world: BCHS wins AA State Title.

The theme for this year’s BCHS cheer squad was “Queens don’t back down.” Friday morning, BC had a chance to rise up one last time at the state finals in Macon.

Though a weekday morning, a large group of supporters were on hand to cheer them on. They roared as announcer Jeff Halsey called them to the floor. What they saw was what both coaches and fans had been hoping for.

A complete routine. Everything stuck. Stunts stayed up. The pyramid had no problems. Smiles during the routine and screams of joy afterward showed a squad who wanted to be out there.

Bleckley would be called to the floor. Then Halsey said the words which set off the biggest celebration in years for those wearing purple and gold. “Ladies and gentlemen, you 2021 Georgia High School Association AA state cheerleading champion, Bleckley County.”

Screams of joy could be heard and a loud chant of “BC” came from an exuberant group of fans. Head coach Heather Davis said she was incredibly proud of the girls for the way they rebounded from last week’s performance at Vidalia.

She added “I’m also so very thankful for all the cheer alum before them who laid the foundation.” Davis said, “It’s a win for the whole program, past and present.” The title is the third in program history, first since 2001-02.

The squad. Front row L-R: Amiyah Thigpen, Gabbi Ragan, Amaya Smith, Hailey Merritt, Kirsten Villarreal. Middle row L-R: Gabbie Wells, Chesney White, Ansley Newman, Graycen Phinazee, Ebryanna Hall, Emilee Reed . Back row L-R: Coach Allie Smith, Bailey Enright, Alexis Rogers, Jasmine Smith, Makenli Armstrong, Isabelle Bennett, Shanise Floyd, Taylor Raley, head coach Heather Davis.

In 2017, BCHS had their first top ten appearance in nearly a decade, finishing seventh. They improved to fourth in 2018. Bleckley finished third in 2019, then runner up in the COVID-extended 2020-21 season. This year’s squad can be called the queens of cheerleading (in Class 2A anyway.)
