The sports cliche' says "All you can do is your best." Though surprisingly low scoring did not get the BCHS Competition Cheerleaders the results that were hoped for, they had one of their best performances of the season Saturday at the Columbus Civic Center.
Going into the finals, Bleckley was second seed from the sectionals. The top seed was Coosa, third was Armuchee, fourth Callhoun. As the rotation was drawn up, even-numbered seeds got early performance times.
That put the Royals as the fourth AA team, 10th team overall at the A, AA, AAA finals. A large contingent from Cochran had gathered early that morning to secure a section so they could be closer to the squad. As the announcer said "Bleckley County, you may take the floor," they were treadted to a loud ovation from the Royal supporters.
What they saw was a sharp routine from Bleckley. Great tumbling, great jumps, great motions. No stunts fell. The pyramid, which had given the squad trouble numerou times this season, looked better.
Another loud ovation could be heard as the squad left the floor after their performance. Perofrming so early meant a long wait until the announcement of the top six from each division was announced.
That was the final time Bleckley and its fans would have reason to cheer. Though the Royals were in the top six, there would be no more celebration. BCHS finished sixth at state. There were no deductions on the score sheet.
Even more surprising, despite looking as good if not better than yesterday, teams which BC finished ahead of were ahead of them today. North Oconnee was fifth, Armuchee third, Callhoun second. Amongst many supporters, there was a familiar feeling of frustration with the judges.
However, the coaches did express pride in again being one of the top six teams in the state. Bleckley has finished in the top six at state every year since 2001. Congratulations to the cheerleaders and coaches on another good season.
