Maybe the delay was a good thing. Originally, the MGMSAA Region Cheerleading Championship was supposed to be on October 25 in Dodge County. But a scheduling mistake forced it to be rescheduled.
Region was held Tuesday at East Laurens Middle School. Though the competition was a rare weekday affair, Bleckley had a large contigent of support. They included several members of the BCHS Competition Cheerleaders.
The Barons were the first of six MGMSAA schools to compete. As they entered the gym and prepared to take the mat, the familiar chant of "Bleckley County!" rang out from the large throng of purple and gold.
As was the case at last year's region, Bleckley had saved their best performance for their final competition. BCMS was sharp in every aspect. Great jumps, sharp tumbling, tight stunts. Their performance got a loud ovation from the fans as they left the floor.
Another ovation greeted the girls as they re-entered to watch the remainder of the competition. Bleckley was also a part of the post-competition activities, as they participated in the jump-off, tumble-off, and lib-off.
It was soon time for the awards. Makayla Mullis won the jump-off. When the team awards were announced, Bleckley had another reason to cheer. They finished second. Though the squad did not win a third straight region title, they had ended the season with another top two finish, and their best performance of the year.
BCMS missed beating champion West Laurens by just one point. There were no deductions on the score sheet. Since re-joining the the MGMSAA in 2004, BCMS cheerleading has finished first or second in region every year.
Congratulations to the squad and coaches on another good season.
