On Tuesday Bleckley County High School Anatomy and
Healthcare Science students were treated to a visit from Hawkinsville resident and Marine Corps veteran Tony Mullis. Mr. Mullis spoke about the injuries he sustained while deployed in Afghanistan, the time he spent being
treated and rehabilitated and how his life has changed as a result of his double leg amputations.
Students learned about some of the engineering
behind modern prosthetics, the process of putting on and removing a prosthesis and what life is like for someone who has sustained such injuries. Mr. Mullis answered many questions and told all gathered that he is able to do most of the things he wants to do.
Since his injuries, he has been knee boarding, snow skiing and snowboarding, and he has even joined forces with a fellow injured veteran to start a non-profit organization,
Amputee Outdoors. This organization takes other disabled veterans on hunting and fishing trips in order to encourage them to participate in the activities they enjoy despite any injuries they might have.
According to their website, www.amputeeoutdoors.com, their mission is "to help the wounded, like ourselves, feel normal, dream normal, and live normal lives."
Mr. Mullis said he wants to show the veterans he comes in contact with through these trips that they can do the things they want to do. Special thanks to Mr. Mullis for sharing his story and educating our students on the topic of prosthetics.
