BCHS One Act says "hello" with Bye Bye Birdie.

The girls declare "Yes I'll always care" about Conrad Birdie.

It was eight years ago BCHS performed "Bye Bye Birdie" as a one act play selection. That year, Bleckley won region and finished state runner up. A new cast with many first-year performers took on the task this year.

Albert (Desmond Sasser) assures Rose (Emily Dyal) it'll be just the two of them once "One Last Kiss" is produced.

Thursday evening was the first of four performances. Kelli Greer said what was seen Thursday would not be the same as what they perform at region. She said they allowed more parts to give performers more time on stage. For region (that will be at BCHS October 23) all plays must be done including having the stage cleared in 55 minutes.

Kim (Geena Smith) informs best friend Ursula Merkle (Sydney Sandoval) she's giving up Conrad Birdie because she's becoming a woman.

For those unfamiliar with the story, "Bye By Birdie" takes place in the 50's. Albert Peterson (Desmond Sasser) is the owner of struggling Almaelou Records. His star Conrad Birdie (John Gilbert) is about to go into the Army. Even worse, his longtime secretary/love interest Rose Alvarez (Emily Dyal) is about to leave him.

Dorris (Macy Smith) and Kim react to the news that Conrad Birdie is coming to Sweet Apple.

But upon hearing how much debt Albert has racked up and really can't shut down the company, Rose comes up with an idea. Have Biride give "one last kiss" to a fan. Albert is going to write a song about that last kiss. The money would allow him to pay off debts and go back to college (Albert was an English teacher.) He also has to find a way to break it to his mother Mae (Caitlyn Bambrough.)

Albert tries to convince Brianna Lopez and Logan Nobles to "Put On A Happy Face."

The fan selected was Kim MacAfee (Geena Smith.) She's the Conrad Birdie Fan Club President in Sweet Apple, Ohio. She also recently started going steady with Hugo Peabody (Spence Greer.) Albert, Conrad, and Rose travel to Sweet Apple. There they meet Kim and her family. Dad Harry (Kory Brantley) becomes comically frustrated with the intrusions into his normal routine.

Mom Doris (Macy Smith) tries to keep peace and be understanding. Poor Randolph (Logan Arnold) just tries to help and get along but would often be told to "shut up" by Harry. Comical lines include a rant by Harry who, after talking about how he'd tried to run the house fairly, the "Magna Carta had been revoked" because of all the disruptions, and several exchanges between Mae and Rose.

After taking reporter questions, the goal is to show Conrard as "A Healthy, Normal, American Boy."

When it looked like Conrad would finally deliever that kiss on the Ed Sullivan show, Hugo shows up and punches him. Who got him to do this? Did Conrad ever give that kiss? Would Albert ever stand up to Mae?

Everyone collapses after dancing along to Conrad's "Honestly Sincere."

To find out, as well as see the student-designed choreography for the many dance numbers including "Phone Hour," catch one of the next three performances. They're Sunday at 3:30 pm, then Monday and Tuesday at 7:30 pm.

Harry MacAfee (Kory Brantley) looks on in disgust as his family swoons over Conrad.

Albert has to restrain Rose as Mae (Caitlyn Bambrough) introduces Gloria Rasputen (River Wood.) Mae wanted her to be Albert's secretary.
