Middle Georgia State expands Bachelor's in History to Cochran campus.

In past years, students attending Middle Georgia State wishing to get a Bachelor of Arts in History had to travel to Macon or other campuses. But beginning Spring semester 2017, that will change.

Dr. Matthew Zimmerman, chair of the Department of History and Political Science, said students on the Cochran campus will have the opportunity to earn the four-year degree through courses with faculty on site. In the past, they had to travel to other campuses to complete the program.

The Bachelor of Arts in History was one of the degrees offered by the former Macon State College in 2013 which was consolidated with Middle Georgia State College to form Middle Georgia State University. Core classes for the History degree have always been offered in Cochran. With this new development, upper division courses will also be available.

Middle Georgia State University’s Bachelor of Arts in History offers two tracks: traditional and secondary education. The traditional track is aimed at students interested in careers in the arts, law, government and community service, historical interpretation and museum work, as well as graduate study. The secondary education track prepares students to teach history at the high school level.

Students in both tracks study primary historical sources extensively and learn to read critically and write analytically. Some of the degree program’s core courses are available online.

The History Student Organization is one of the most active on the Macon Campus. Zimmerman said in a release that he hoped history majors in Cochran would develop a chapter.

“The History Student Organization hosts guest speakers, sponsors movie viewings and discussions and organizes field trips,” Zimmerman said. “Some of those activities are open to the public, so a Cochran Campus chapter would also benefit the community.”
