Mt. Calvary and Mt. Zion players shake hands after Mt. Calvary won 6-2 to advance.

Repeating as a champion is never easy. Just look at basketball's Golden State Warriors. Bethany Baptist Church won last year's tournament championship. Their road to first place was far from simple.

Bethany emerged as victor from field play at House of Grace. The other winners were Mt. Calvary and First Baptist Church team one. FBC needed two games to defeat St. Paul Baptist. That would come into play later.

Bethany and FBC 1 met first. First Baptist would score six unanswered runs to rally from a 4-1 deficit to win 7-4. However, playing a second straight game against Mt. Calvary, FBC lost 10-2. The loss from Ruth carried over, ending their day.

Taking on Mt. Calvary for first place, Bethany trailed 8-5 in their final at bat. A seven-run inning forced game two. Leading 7-4 in the seventh, Mt. Calvary loaded the bases with one out. They scored two on a ball that bounced off the shortstop with two outs.

This year's league director Karen Mathis poses with members of Ruth Baptist Church. Their team received the sportsmanship award.

But a flyout to left ended the game. Bethany Baptist Church repeats as league softball champions.
