Though school is out, the Bleckley Board of Education had several items of note to discuss and vote on at last night's monthly meeting. They included changes to the handbook for all schools.

Amongst the changes were the banning of cellphones and any item that can access the Internet at Bleckley Primary, a change to when parents could pick up children at Bleckley Elementary, and changes to the dress code at BCMS. One new policy adopted, GAK, establishes background checks for all first-time employees, both full and part time, and classified position. It also mandates that all personnel will be given background checks in accordance with state law, state board rules, and rules of the Professional Standards Committee.

Those attempting to get their certification renewed will also have background checks done. Classified employees will be subject to periodic checks, not to exceed five years. Part time employees/substitutes will be required to pay for the checks, the district will cover cost for certified and full-time staff.

The new policy will also require volunteers and chaperones supervising students on field trips to undergo a background check. An exception can be made if the parents/guardians provide explicit permission for their student to be alone with a certain volunteer chaperone.

Michelle Dyal will transfer from BCMS to be principal.
