Bleckley School District recognized for Farm to School accomplishments.

Bleckley School Nutrition Director Kelli Green was one of 75 representatives from schools across Georgia at the Georgia Railroad Freight Depot to recognize districts with outstanding Farm to School Programs.

Those districts received the Golden Radish Award. The award is a collaborative effort between the Georgia Departments of Agriculture, Education and Public Health, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension and Georgia Organics.

The Golden radish recognizes all aspects of Farm to School from local food procurement, hosting taste tests, to gardening with students. Bleckley was recognized at the Gold Level for their accomplishments during the 2016-17 school year. According to a release, they included:

*Gardens in the FCCLA and FFA Classes and the chickens raised by students for the poultry judging team.

*Working with local farmers including Ginger Butts of Back to Basics 101. Butts demonstrated classes the stages of wheat production allowing each student to work with the wheat berry from stalk to grinding it into flour.

*BCHS students participating in cooking classes including
creating spinach recipes and conducting a taste test for Leaf it Spinach Day during October Farm to School Month.
