From BleckleyProgress.com Community News As it was the final one of 2017, Tuesday night’s monthly Board of Education meeting featured fall recognition as well as preparing things for next year. Before the meeting began, a moment of silence was observed for former teacher and coach Dale Jones who recently passed away.
Several groups of students were recognized. The first was the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council made up of students in second through twelfth grades. Superintendent Steve Smith said the students provided feedback to him on things about school such as what they liked and didn’t like. He said many of their suggestions were used by the Strategic Planning Committee in their presentation to the board at last week’s called meeting. The committee’s plan was approved later that night. Recognized next was the girls state champion cross country team as well as individual state champions Austin Perez and Garrett Rogers. Perez was the first individual female state champion since Ashley Arnold. Rogers won the third straight individual boys title. Last but far from least was recognition of the national champion FFA Forestry Team. Smith praised advisor Doyle Floyd for his many achievements (IE: state titles, district top finishes.) Floyd said Blake Bohannon couldn’t be there, the BCHS alum was taking finals at UGA. Approved were the meeting dates for 2018 (they will run on the at a later time.) Kim Wright will remain board chair, Derek Beflower, co-chair as both were elected to two-year terms. Mike Sasser was nominated and selected as board legislative liaison. From the executive session- the resignation due to retirement of former teacher and current board office employee Wendy Meadows was accepted, effective December 31.
