Though the weather hardly feels springlike at the moment, it'll soon be time for spring baseball, softball and T-Ball at the Cochran Bleckley Recreation Department. Opening Day is March 24.

Unlike past years where games would start, this year's ceremonies begin at 4 pm. It will include recognition of the Volunteer of the Year as well as a flyover following the national anthem.

Games start at 5 pm and will have a one-hour drop dead time limit and are exhibitions. There will be a fireworks show once all games are completed and it gets dark.

When players, parents, and fans come to the park this year, they may notice things look different. The rec. department has spent this past winter making upgrades to the fields.

According to a document sent out by CBRD Director Andy Brand, these are the upgrades that have taken place.

● New 30 ft by 10 ft dugouts poured on five fields
● New roofing on 10 dugouts
● New player bench seating
● New, coated fencing and back stops on five fields
● New scoreboards with game clocks on five fields
● Windscreens on five fields
● Protective fence toppers on five fields
● New foul poles on five fields
● Irrigation ran to the five fields
● Obtained new clay/sand mix for playing surfaces
● New park signage

This photo on the Cochran-Bleckley Rec. Department website shows one of the new scoreboards that will be in use when baseball and softball seasons begin.

Brand said in the same email the improvements were paid for with SPLOST funds. You can learn more about what's happening at the rec. department by visiting cbrdrecreation.com
