The Bleckley Board of Education held a called meeting Thursday night. First on the agenda was a contract with Sielox to provide security services for BCHS. Board members watched a YouTube video of a news story demonstrating the services at Tiger Creek Elementary School in Catoosa County. Following the video, there was discussion, including assurance that language in the contract involving retainage would be removed. Board members unanimously approved the contract.

Cost will be $16,157.89. If the services are successful, schools will be added until the entire district is covered. Once the system is installed more information will be released on what it does.

Also discussed was the revised policy attendance policy for BCHS. No action was taken as it’s currently scheduled to be voted on at the July 17 regular meeting. One part of the new policy that members asked for clarification on was any student with 17 absences will not be allowed to go on any school-sponsored field trips.

As currently constructed, all events requiring overnight stays (IE: cross country meets, club trips to state conventions) must be approved by the board and are done under the category of field trips. It was requested that a paragraph be added to the policy to define specifically what students wouldn’t be allowed to participate in. A broad discussion of attendance policies at all schools took place, including a desire for more uniformity in each.

There was discussion about making attendance part of the Code of Conduct and Strategic Plan. Superintendent Steve Smith pointed out that attendance was in the balance scorecard of the Strategic Plan. Smith said he would look into it for the next school year. Following a brief Executive Session, the meeting was adjourned.
