Middle Georgia State lowering tuition for online courses.

For years, students who’ve taken University System of Georgia classes online, including those offered by Middle Georgia State University, have been charged a higher tuition than traditional students. The higher rate was attributed to things like the cost of creating online courses, hardware and software needed, and tools for test proctoring being higher than for classes taught on campus. That will change starting this fall.

Middle Georgia State University announced a decrease in tuition for online courses starting fall 2018. According to a release, the reduction is about 11 percent and will amount to around $60 in savings for a three-hour credit course. The reduction by MGA follows a 2017 directive issued by USG Chancellor Steve Wrigley instructing institutions to phase out the online tuition differential.

An online course at Middle Georgia State this fall will cost $150 per credit hour, down from $169. The majority of courses are worth three credit hours, reducing the cost of a typical online class from $507 to $450. Barring any changes, the plan is to continue to reduce online tuition over the next two years, ultimately making the cost of an online course and traditional class the same by 2020.

The tuition decrease applies to classes offered by Middle Georgia State, not to eCore and eMajor courses offered through the University System of Georgia. Learn more about MGA tuition and fee rates by going to www.mga.edu/bursar/tuition-fees/
