The millage rate for 2018 (FY19) was set at last night’s monthly Board of Education meeting. Following a recommendation from Superintendent Steve Smith, the board voted to use the rollback rate of 14.286 (down from 14.334.) It’s the same as the tentative rate set at last month’s meeting.

Recognized at the meeting were students who had placed first in events at 4-H. Bleckley had the most members attend state congress. According to the minutes, delivery method for the new primary school will be a main topic of discussion at a September 4 work session.

Smith presented an appropriation from Georgia Department of Education Facilities to replace the HVAC unites at both the elementary and high schools following post planning at the end of the school year. Architects will be asked to provide cost estimates. The application was approved.

Approved was a Georgia Department of Education grant for 21st Century Community Learning Center in the amount of $335,970. Norris and Associates were approved as evaluator for the grant, per a recommendation from Communities in Schools/Family Connection. The board also approved a CIS/FC recommendation to use Norris and Associates for the Federal Rural Health Network Development grant accepted in July.

Smith said the District Safety Committee would be meeting August 30 and recommendations would be coming. He spoke of numerous safety measures already taken including installation of the new Seilox system at BCHS, as well as the middle school and Success Academy, installing cameras on all buses with HD video and audio, as well as holding an active shooter drill at Bleckley Primary.

One action that was taken at the meeting was the hiring of another school resource officer. Deputy Charles Warren was hired, ten months of his salary and benefits will be paid by the school district.

In other personnel matters from the Executive Session, Mike Lee made a return to coaching of sorts at BCMS. The former head football coach and athletic director was added to the coaching plan as associate athletic director.
