Board of Education votes on construction delivery plan of new primary school. ***Updated***

Discussion of the new primary school was one of many topics discussed at Tuesday night’s monthly Board of Education meeting. Members reviewed some of the slides presented by Altman+Barrett during the September 4 called meeting along with another proposed layout. They also reviewed an advertisement for land surveyors of the proposed site, a risk hazard assessment report, as well as a Phase I Environmental Assessment.

A vote was taken on the construction delivery method for the new school. The board voted to approve Superintendent Steve Smith’s recommendation of using Construction Manager at Risk as the delivery method. It entails a guaranteed maximum price based upon construction documents and specifications at the time of the price as well as any reasonably inferred items or tasks. Another item in relation to the primary school was a location change of for the October 9 monthly meeting. Per a request from Smith, the meeting will be held at Bleckley Primary so members can conduct a facilities walkthrough.

Earlier in the meeting, members got a demonstration of technology that allows for 3-D examination of items. According to the minutes, the demonstration was done by Richard Boyer of Vizitech. Called the Z-Space, the board approved the purchase of three units that will be placed at Bleckley Elementary, BCMS, and BCHS at the cost of $16,762.44 including training.

Also approved was the FY19 Perkins IV Improvement Grant as presented by CTAE Director Matt Godwin along with providing local matching funds. Grant allocation is $20,082 with $24,000 currently budgeted for matching funds.

Smith asked the minutes recognize Bill and Vickie Cheek for their donation of a reel mower to BCHS Athletics. They also approved proclamations for recognition of National 4-H Week (October 7-13), National School Lunch Week (October 15-19) and a resolution recognizing National School Bus Safety Week October 22-26.

Milestone testing results in relation to other Heart of Georgia RESA Schools were discussed. While the high school graduation rate decreased slightly from 98 percent to 97.4, all other rates increased. You can read more by clicking the link posted earlier and going to item F.

From the Executive Session, Kayla Warren was added as high school assistant cheerleading coach. Warren is a former game and competition squad cheerleader and teacher at Bleckley Elementary. The vacant middle school girls basketball coaching positions were filled as Tisha Ates was named head coach, Frances McNair assistant coach. Casey Carden was added as a non-compensated community middle school tennis coach.
