The Bleckley Board of Education voted to keep the 2019 (FY20) millage rate at 14.286 mills. It’s the same rate as last year. Superintendent Steve Smith went over the 2019 Tax Digest as well as a pro-forma presentation of the 2020 Tax Digest.

An update on the new primary school was given at last night’s meeting. According to minutes, the new school’s location had been approved by the Georgia Department of Education’s facilities division and the preliminary application for the building had been submitted.

It will require board approval and will be presented at the September 17 meeting. A work session will be held on September 3 at 6 pm where the project architects will provide an update.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Trey Belflower was called on by Smith to provide an update on the HVAC project after Smith said the contractor had completed all work at Bleckley Elementary. Minutes state Belflower said the project took longer than expected, but only units at the BCHS auditorium, gym, and front offices remained. They’re expected to be completed within the next 30 days.

Approved was the FY20 Memorandum of Understanding with the Bleckley County Sheriff’s Office regarding School Resource Officers. Smith said the district pays half the cost of two officers, full cost of the third. It equates to them paying for two SRO’s and the Sheriff’s Office paying for one.

The board also approved updated procurement procedures for school nutrition per a recommendation from director Kelli Green. The updated procedures can be found by going to
