Primary School project officially moving forward.

You might say it’s “officially official.” The site location for the new primary school had already gotten initial approval by the Georgia Department of Education. The application for the project has been field. At Tuesday night’s monthly Board of Education meeting, the application was approved.

Dr. Trey Belflower provided an update on the HVAC project. According to meeting minutes, the project is expected to be completed in two weeks with testing and adjustments to follow. Part of the update was an explanation on why a change order done by the contractors wasn’t accepted.

Superintendent Steve Smith referenced a memo sent to board members in which he explained the contractor wanted to install small versions of Direct Digital Controls l for the high school gym and auditorium units. It was done once the architect and contractor found out the original DDC controls for both units hadn’t worked for over seven years.

Cost of the DDC controls would be $46,805. The memo started that a Pruett foreman had recommended T thermostats with relays to run the units as they’d been doing without the controls. Consultations with staff members who have experience with HVAC said the setup would work. They didn’t believe the potential problems outlined in a letter from Pruett air justified the cost.

Before fundraisers and overnight field trips were approved, minutes state board members asked Smith to remind staff about following protocol in requesting permission before any fundraisers or overnight field trips occur.

From special recognition, Bleckley Shotgun Team members who won state were recognized. The minutes noted that the board would execute proclamations or resolutions for National 4-H Week (October 6-12), National School Lunch Week (October 14-18), as well as National School Bus Safety Week (October 21-25)

In other 4-H news, the board accepted the resignation, with regret due to retirement, of County Extension Office employee Cheryl Little effective September 30. A drop-in reception celebrating her 20 years of service will be held Friday at the County Extension Office, 165 East Peacock Street, from 3:30-5:30 pm.
