Major personnel moves at BOE meeting.

The Bleckley County Board of Education met in called session Tuesday night to deal with several personnel matters. Following an invocation from chair Kim Wright, the meeting went immediately into executive session.

One action taken was to “condemn the actions of and acknowledge receipt of a letter of resignation from Brantley Collins, BCHS Teacher (hired on 7/30/2018), effective September 30, 2019.” Collins was a SPED (Special Education) teacher as well as an assistant football coach and assistant girls basketball coach.

While the initial press release Tuesday night did not name the former teacher allegedly involved in an inappropriate relationship with a student, Superintendent Steve Smith confirmed Collins was the teacher while speaking to area media.

The board also accepted the resignation of “with regret due to retirement” of teacher and coach Shelly Cranford, effective November 30. Cranford built the high school cross country program into one of the most successful in the state, winning three consecutive girls state championships, two straight boys state titles.

Cranford also leaves an indelible mark on track, winning the only girls state track championship in 2007 and served as an assistant coach for last year’s boys state track championship team.

Once executive session was done and all personnel matters were acted upon, it was announced board member Mildred Bloodworth would be resigning due to her moving out of state. The board accepted her resignation “with regret.”

The resignation is effective October 11, her last meeting will be October 10. A replacement will be chosen by the board to fill out the remaining 15 months of her term.
