Georgia State School Superintendent Richard Woods announced state public school FY19l SAT scores this week, noting the statewide composite score of 1048 led the nationwide score of 1039. Locally, Bleckley County led the way.
The 1108 SAT score for Bleckley was the highest amongst all Middle Georgia school districts in both the Heart of Georgia and Middle Georgia RESA (Regional Educational Service Areas.) Said Superintendent Steve Smith in a statement “Our students continue to lead this area in student achievement, and only 11 districts in the entire state had higher scores on the SAT.
These results would be considered very good even for an affluent district, but our teachers and students continue to beat the odds considering the fact that we are considered one of the poorest districts in the state.”
Smith pointed to the ranking that lists Bleckley as 174 out of 180 districts in terms of wealth, meaning only six districts are considered poorer on a per-student basis. According to the release, Bleckley’s millage rate of 14.286 is well below the state average rate of 16.431. Still, the district leads in student achievement locally and is in the top ten percent statewide.
Smith says their success comes from doing the most with what resources are available, “I believe we do the most with the least of any district our size, and we constantly strive to be good stewards of the taxpayers’ money while providing a great return on investment through excellence in academics, the arts, and athletics.”
