From BleckleyProgress.com Community News October 7-11 was Georgia Pre-K week. Bleckley County Pre-K celebrated the occasion with visits from State Representative Danny Mathis, Cochran Fire Chief Brock Wilcher, and author Karen Allen.
Mathis engaged students in the reading of “Llama Llama Red Pajama” by Anna Dewdney, the official book of Georgia Pre-K week. According to a release, he also talked with staff and got a first-hand look at the many ways Bleckley Pre-K supports early learning. Wilcher was joined by Sgt. Randy Brown and firefighters McKayla Conner, Jonathan Leatherwood, Adam Minor, Emmanuel Sepulveda, and Yabsera Alemayehu. They brought a fire truck and equipment to Bleckley Pre-K as well as provided three activity stations for students to participate in while learning about fire safety. Station 1 involved learning all about the firetruck and the equipment firemen use and included getting to get inside the firetruck. Station 2 was a Bucket Brigade where students participated in a water relay depicting the way fires were put out many years ago. Station 3 was a fun role play activity where students learned how to get out of a burning house.
Allen, author of “The Couth Fairy” series of books, visited classes and read her latest book “The Beautiful Bear.” It teaches beauty comes from the heart and within, not outward appearances. Teachers received autographed copies for their classrooms. Georgia Pre-K week is in its ninth year. Its purpose is to raise awareness for the importance of quality early childhood education. Georgia’s Pre-K program was started by former governor Zell Miller in 1992 and has grown from serving 750 students in its first year to approximately 81,000 annually. Bleckley Pre-K serves 154 students in seven classrooms. Each class has 22 students with a lead and assistant teacher. Director Pansy Corbett was appreciative of all who came to visit during the week. “We are so excited to have Representative Mathis and Cochran Fire Chief Brock Wilcher and his team, and author Karen Allen visit our school to show our students that they care about them and their education,” she said in a statement.
