Middle Georgia State adding two degrees to Bachelor's Program.

Middle Georgia State University is adding two new bachelor’s degrees to its degree program. A Bachelor of Arts in Applied Art and Design and a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work are both expected to be launched in fall 2020. Both programs were approved by the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents at their November 12 monthly meeting.

The B.A. in Applied Art is designed to build upon the Associates’ Degree in Art already offered. It will include market-oriented art concentrations in film and visual communication aligned to Georgia’s film production, graphic arts, and advertising industries. Students in the program will be required to earn a professional certificate (IE: The Georgia Film Academy) or minor in business, information technology, professional writing, or web design.

According to a university release, the B.S. in Social Work was a degree many current and former students had asked for. “Social Work” is described as careers in the public or private sector that involve helping people overcome obstacles, regain control of their lives, and become productive members of their communities.

The degree is the typical minimal requirement to enter the field. MGA hopes to eventually offer a Master of Science in Social Work which would allow category specialization such as child welfare, mental health, or substance abuse, plus pursue administrative level jobs. The program will include traditional classes, online work, and a major emphasis on field work.
