BCMS boys head basketball coach Derrick Farrow has a lot to be proud of in terms of on court success. He, along with assistant Antonio Farrow led a team that had won five games two years ago to a region title game berth last year.
Dontavian Harris joined the staff this season. Despite losing much of the team’s height, they reached the MGMSAA title game for a second straight season earlier this month.
But at Wednesday night’s awards ceremony, Farrow spoke of how it was about more than basketball. He said their mission from day one was to use basketball as an educational tool.
He said coaches would talk to players about their day, their grades, how to treat others. Farrow shared a story of how a teacher asked if he’d totaled up his team’s GPA. He said he hadn’t and was pleased to find out the team GPA was 82.
All players received certificates. In handing out awards, Farrow said there were no MVP’s because everyone was important and to not let getting an award define them as players.
The first award, Scholar Athlete, was one Farrow said he would’ve wanted to be included in as an athlete. He stressed the importance of academics first, noting he had to attend junior college because of his grades. Scholar Athlete Awards went to Rodriguez Flagg, Kamari Mack, and Marcus Newsome. Newsome won the Leadership Award, Mack was named most improved. Iverson Baker picked up Defensive Player of the Year Honors. Omari Jackson, who averaged 10 points a game, was Offensive Player of the Year. Markeze Brown won the Gladiator Award. All three coaches spoke at the end, sharing their thoughts on the season, offering well wishes to the eighth graders, and encouraging returning players to get ready for next year.
