All schools to close March 17-April 13.

In an emergency called meeting held Sunday night, the Bleckley County Board of Education voted to close all schools March 17-April 13. Tomorrow is a scheduled holiday. During the closure, all extracurricular activities, practices and field trips are postponed. That includes this year’s prom originally scheduled for April 3.

According to a release, Superintendent Dr. Steve Smith said the move was done in part due expectations that Governor Brian Kemp would either strengthen his recommendation or mandate their closing tomorrow. He added, “Closing schools at this time represents an unprecedented move on our part, but the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 (Coronavirus) is also unprecedented. We wanted to give our parents as much notice as possible.

There have been no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Middle Georgia, the release states concern about the reliability of the data due to the limited availability of test kits.

The district emergency feeding plan will begin March 18. Locations of pickups and deliveries will be announced via the district website, bleckleyschools.org, Tuesday night. To adhere to Georgia food safety regulations, meals will likely consist of cold and shelf-stable items. Lessons, books, and worksheets will also be sent home with meal deliveries.

Smith cautioned against students gathering together and suggested using digital meeting apps for socializing.
