Not to be deterred by the Covid-19 social distancing situation, the Cochran-Bleckley Ministerial Alliance has decided to have their 17th Annual Bible Reading Marathon (BRM) in a unique way.
With 90 hours of reading usually done from the steps of our county courthouse, members of various churches, civic groups and businesses each volunteer to read portions of the Bible.
Instead of reading during a week’s period this year we are having the entire Bible read on one day, Thursday, May 7, which is also the National Day of Prayer.
The readers will be reading in their homes, outside on their patio or decks, down by the pond, or any place they are comfortable. They will also be able to read at any time during that 24-hour period on May 7.
Many of the readers plan to video tape their readings on Facebook for all to enjoy. All readings will be read from any translation of the reader’s choice, but all will be read to bless the Lord.
The local Pilot Club plan to do their readings in honor of three of their members who recently passed away; Helen Churchwell, Vickie Cheek and Bernease Butts.
From the very beginning of our BRM in 2004, it has been our main goal to do this to make our wonderful Lord and Savior happy.
I remember when I met with the ministerial alliance and proposed having a BRM. I emphasized that the marathon was not designed to be an evangelistic outreach or a testimony to the community, or a way to gain new members in our churches.
Although those things are all good and valid, I ended my presentation by asking, “Why can’t we just do something to make God happy?”
That clinched it and here we are 17 years later!
Along with the Bible reading, those who can, will be stopping at noon to pray the prayer that will be prayed over our nation for the National Day of Prayer. Please go to: https://www.nationaldayofprayer.org/ for more information.
