It was an early morning for the Bleckley County Board of Education as they held a called meeting at 7:45 am to discuss budget matters as well as the school calendar. Approved was “hazard pay,” mainly for school nutrition employees who will work all days food is being served until the end of school.

Also approved were furlough days. The possibility of them was mentioned at the May 5 called meeting as a way of helping to deal with projected budget shortfalls due to expected funding cuts being done by the state. According to meeting minutes, the furlough days will be spaced out.

Three will be taken in May, seven in FY31. They’ll mainly consist of converting teacher workdays into furlough days and one student day to a teacher workday. Amended school calendars factoring in the furlough days with a tentative graduation date of June 13 and the start date for students in FY21 of Augudt 10 were approved.

The tentative FY21 budget was approved. It reflects furlough days, funding cuts, as well as money received from the CARES Act. You can find the budget by going to https://simbli.eboardsolutions.com/Meetings/Attachment.aspx?S=4014&AID=1151143&MID=85629

An opportunity for public comment on the budget will take place at the May 19 regular meeting that will be held in the high school auditorium as well as at the June 9 meeting when the final budget will be adopted.
