Guests could get a pamphlet with information about the new primary school and other athletic projects as they signed in.

“All good things must come to an end.” That phrase could be used to describe the school building at 242 East Dykes Street. Since 1956, it’s served as the educational home for many current and former Cochran residents.

Sheila Brantley looks at some of the old yearbooks on display.

From 1956-77, the building was Cochran High School. It became Bleckley County High School in 1977 and served as the high school until the current building was completed in 2005. For the past 13 years, Bleckley Pre-K has called it home.

Now, the building will be going away. Demolition work will begin Monday to make way for a new primary school that will hold both primary and Pre-K. Saturday afternoon, school officials opened the building one last time to give people a chance to walk the halls, collect any memorabilia not nailed down.

People look at the brick pathway which contains memorial bricks dedicated to students who died.

Many former students used the time to reminisce. Stories could be heard such as “That was (insert teacher’s name) room” or “I had class in that room.” Some walked all the way to the old library and Purcell Gymnasium, just to get once last glance.

This group was from the BCHS Class of 1996.

Note: during the demolition and construction process, the old track behind the current primary school will be closed. Once the project is complete, it will be reopened, shorter, to serve as a public park.
