BOE declares middle school car rider line an emergency situation to expedite repairs.

The car rider line at BCMS near the gym entrance had become a major issue due to groundwater undermining the driveway. School starts on August 10. Under the normal repair process, the work would have to be bid out.

Thursday night’s called Board of Education meeting was to address getting the repairs started. After receiving permission from the Department of Education Facilities Division to expedite repairs, Superintendent Dr. Steve Smith presented a recommendation to declare the repairs an emergency under O.C.G.A. §36-91-22. The board approved unanimously.

The repair work was added on to the work being done by construction management firm JCI Contractors. They had solicited bids for the project and obtained a quote of $77,758.19 from Appling Brothers. The quote was approved.

It was announced this week budget cuts would likely be closer to ten percent than the original 14 percent originally forecast. As a result, Smith recommended adding back two pre-planning days that would’ve been furlough days back to the school calendar. August 3 and 4 were added back as pre-planning days with the expectation more days could be added back once final budget was passed.

There was discussion regarding documents that will be sent home regarding the start of school. They’ll include an ad which includes school supply lists as well as a press release. During discussion, board member Amy Williams noted a conversation she’d had with a neighbor regarding the length of time the sink stays on in the girls restroom.

Williams said the neighbor had timed the sink and it wouldn’t stay on for 20 seconds, the recommended time to wash one’s hands. Smith said they would look into adjusting the pressure to ensure the sink stayed on long enough.
