The Bleckley County Board of Education held two called meetings Thursday which served as tax hearings regarding the millage rate. One person attended the 11 am meeting, Faye Mullis.

Following Superintendent Dr. Steve Smith’s presentation regarding the millage rate (the same one he did at the first hearing), Mullis asked for clarification regarding the affect COVID-19 had on the budget. Meeting minutes state Smith said originally the state had planned to cut funding by 14.4 percent, but the cut of $1.6 million dollars amounted to a less than ten percent cut.

There was no public attendance at the third hearing. Following the hearing, one more called meeting was held to set the final millage rate. Per a recommendation from Smith, the board voted to keep the rate at 14.286 mills.

As previously reported, the rate remains unchanged but will result in a tax increase for some people because of increased assessed property values.
