While Bleckley County has had its issues with COVID-19, one thing the virus hasn’t stopped is people exercising their right to vote. As of Tuesday, 47 percent of active voters had already cast ballots.
That’s according to a release from Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. He attributed the high turnout to the work of state and local election officials are putting n to hold elections.
Raffensperger added, “We are setting records every hour. Adjusting to a new voting system or turning on a dime to accommodate a surge in absentee by mail voting would be enough to challenge even the most seasoned elections officials. Doing so with the added complications of COVID-19 has made this effort truly Herculean.”
Numbers wise, 3,127 of 7,536 registered voters have cast ballots, 41 percent. The high turnout tracks with the record number of early voters seen not only across Georgia but nationwide.
Of the 3,127 ballots cast, 847 were absentee ballots returned either by mail or absentee drop boxes. Another 2,280 voted early in person. Election Day is November 3.
