Thursday night was to be practice for this weekend’s New Year’s Battlefield Bash and Street Stock World Championships at Cochran Motor Speedway But the threat of rain throughout the weekend forced it to be postponed.

However, the track hosted another “bash,” a New Year’s Eve party inside the banquet hall located next to the track. Featuring the Soul Shine Band, track owner Chris Martin said they wanted to give the community something to do while keeping everyone safe.

He mentioned tables being spaced out as well having law enforcement on hand. As to the races, Martin said a local motel owner had told him they were booked from people coming in for the race. Thus, the postponement not only affected them, but other businesses in the community also.

While the banquet hall has hosted end of the season point leader banquets, this was the first public event held. Martin said they plan to open it to community rentals in 2021. One event already scheduled to take place there is an arts and crafts bazar in March.
