Royals roll at Toombs County. ***Offensive stats added September 5***

Two Royals team up on a tackle.


It was a matchup of former region rivals as BCHS traveled to the Pit to take on Toombs County. According to ghsfha.org, it was the first meeting between the two since 2009, a 25-21 win in Lyons.

Eli Mullis started at quarterback due to James Teston being injured. The Bulldogs struck first on a 41-yard touchdown pass. The point after missed but Toombs led 6-0 with 9:13 left.

Later in the quarter, aided by a Mulls keeper on fourth and three from the 21, Mullis connected with Darwin Yates on an 11-yard touchdown pass. James Fordham’s kick was good, and BC led 7-6.

In the second, a run by TJ Mays got the offense to Toombs’ 24. The drive was capped by an eight-yard Jahvon Butler run with nine minutes left. On their next possession, a Butler run would again get the offense to the Bulldog 24. Butler scored from a yard out with 3:35 left.

Bleckley took a 21-6 lead into halftime. The Royals had the ball to begin the third. Set up by a return to the Bulldog 37, it took less than a minute for Mullis to connect with Jaden Mobley on a 34-yard touchdown pass as the lead grew to 28-6.

Aided by a personal foul, BC appeared to be on another scoring march. But with 6:15 left, the Bulldogs returned an interception 74 yards for six. The point after was again missed.

BC returned the favor on the Bulldogs next possession when Areklius English returned an interception 70 yards. With 4:50 left in the third, the Royals led 35-12. Toombs got what proved to be their final touchdown of the game on a one-yard run with 1:28 left.

A two-point conversion attempt failed. The teams traded turnovers in the fourth. Toombs recovered a fumbled punt return on the Royals 43 only to have the drive stopped by an English interception.

The Royals went on to win 35-18. Mullis was 13 of 19 for 138 yards, two touchdowns, one interception. He also rushed for 34 yards on seven carries. Butler ran for 149 yards on 18 carries with two touchdowns.

Mays had 54 yards on six carries. Mobley caught six balls for 66 yards with one score. Yates had three receptions for 50 yards with one score. Teston's status for the September 10 home game against Vidalia is unknown. Kickoff is 7:30 pm.
