BOE to continue current COVID protocols.

The Bleckley County Board of Education met in a called session Thursday night to discuss COVID-19 numbers. According to meeting minutes, Superintendent Dr. Steve Smith presented Georgia Department of Public Health information for the county as well as current district info.

Smith said according to the DPH website, there had been no cases of residents under 18 hospitalized or dying of COVID-19 since March 2020. He said the district high mark for students testing positive for COVID was 51 on August 25 of this year, with 30 students currently testing positive.

Regarding the option to quarantine with a mask at school, Smith said 57 students were currently doing that and the number had been as high as 102. Following discussion, the board agreed to continue to monitor data and not change current protocols.

There was also an executive session. The only news of public interest to come from it was approval of the Substitute Teacher / Parapro Incentive Plan paid with CARES funds to attract more substitute teachers and compensate parapros for taking on substitute teacher duties.

Smith said a similar plan would be coming to to provide incentives for teachers who cover classes during their planning periods as a result of COVID quarantines and isolations.
