Middle Georgia State University announced this week they’d received a silver seal for student voter participation from the All In Campus Democracy Challenge for achieving a 60 to 70 percent voting rate among students in 2020.
According to a release, All In is a national, non-partisan initiative of Civic Nation designed to help institutions strengthen efforts to improve civic learning, political engagement, and voter participation. Ensuring students are registered to vote and participate in elections are key components of the organization’s work.
MGA received a bronze seal in 2018 for a student voter rate of 50 and 59 percent in the 2016 elections. They also received a gold seal for having a participation rate between 40 and 49 percent in the 2018 midterm elections.
According to the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement, MGA’s student voter rate increased from 52.7 percent in 2016 to 65.4 percent in 2020. That news pleased Dr. Christopher Lawrence, chair of MGA’s Department of Political Science and chair of the University’s chapter of All In Campus Democracy Challenge.
“We’re delighted that Middle Georgia State University has again been recognized for our efforts to encourage every eligible student to exercise their right to vote and make their voice heard in national elections. We look forward to continuing our work leading up to the 2022 midterm and gubernatorial elections.”
