The Bleckley County School District announced Board of Education chair Mike Sasser passed away in Atlanta Thursday. Sasser was in Atlanta with the rest of the board for the Georgia School Board Association/Georgia School Superintendents Association Winter Conference.

He had accepted the GSBA Small District Governance Team of the Year award on behalf of Superintendent Dr. Steve Smith Wednesday night as Smith was unable to attend due to a death in the family. According to a release, other board members said Sasser appeared to be his normal self that evening.

Smith spoke highly of Sasser in a statement, calling him a “devoted husband, father, community member, and board member.” He described Sasser as “was the epitome of what a board member should be, always putting students first and making sure we were good stewards of the taxpayers’ money.”

Sasser leaves behind wife Angie and two sons, Desmond and Dominic. Final funeral arrangements will be posted on the district website (bleckleyschools.org) and social media accounts when known.
