News from Tuesday night's Board of Education meeting. ***Corrected***

The Bleckley County Board of Education held their monthly meeting Tuesday night. There was action on some items, including the FY24 budget.
The tentative FY24 budget was approved unanimously. There was an opportunity for public comment but there was no one in attendance who wished to speak. Another opportunity for public comment will take place before the final budget is voted on June 11.

The board approved an agreement with the state Board of Education to operate the district as a Strategic Waiver School. A Strategic Waiver School allows smaller school districts to exempt themselves from some state standards such as class size and salary scale requirements.. There are specific requirements in the contract to be a Strategic Waiver School and penalties for non-compliance.

From the Executive Session, approved was the resignation of board member Melissa Stewart, effective immediately. Lara Rowland, who had previously announced her retirement, was hired as a 49 percent Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum/Assessment.

Two updates were made to the FY25 Athletic Staffing Plan. Tyler Sapp was as director of Training Services for the high school. Coach William Barham decided to not continue as an assistant coach for BCHS softball.

There was special recognition at the start of the meeting. Recognized were the members of the state champion literary team, members of the BCHS girls track team who won state, and the Student Leadership team. All received a $5 Dairy Queen gift card.
