The threat of rain Friday night meant a Thursday night Homecoming contest against Southwest. It was a bad night for the Royals as the defense couldn’t stop the Patriot big plays and the offense never truly got on track.

The Royals broke out gold jerseys for Homecoming.

Things got off to a good start as Zyion Love dashed 53-yards to the endzone with 10:18 left in the first. Southwest though would answer aided by a long run to the Royal 8. Two plays later, the Patriots were within one at 7-6 as they missed the two-point conversion.

In the second, a BC drive would stall at the Southwest five. Ford Childers connected on a 22-yard field goal. With 9:51 left in the half, BC led 10-6. The Royal defense held on Southwest’s next possession when they reached the BC 46.

But with 3:24 left in the half, with the Patriots backed up on their 19, the Royal defense gave up an 81-yard touchdown run. A successful two-point conversion made it 14-10.

As the half wound down, a BC drive was stopped at the Patriot 12. Childers connected on his second field goal of the half, this time from 27 yards to draw Bleckley to within 14-13 at halftime.

In the third, Jireh Campbell recovered a fumble on the Patriot 21. Two plays later, Kam Everett ran the ball in to put Bleckley back in front. The conversion failed but BC led 19-14.

Later in the quarter, Southwest stopped BC on fourth and 3 from the Patriot 47. But on their final drive of the third, Everett got his second rushing touchdown, this time 10 yards. With 51 seconds left, BC led 26-14.

Lindsey Dykes State Farm was the game sponsor. Presenting the football to Dykes was Touchdown Club member Joe Ward.

However, Southwest wasn’t going away quietly. Less than two minutes into the fourth, they hit another big scoring play, this time a 70-yard touchdown reception. The conversion was good and the lead was down to 26-22.

Another BC drive stalled in Southwest territory. With 7:39 left, Childers hit his third field goal of the night, this one from 40 yards to make it a 29-22 game. However, after stopping Southwest, their drive stalled again, this time at the Patriot 20.

A 37-yard field goal was missed. The Patriots got the ball on their 20. With 2:27 left, they got their third big scoring play of the night, a 68-yard touchdown pass. Thanks to the conversion, they led 30-29.

BC got the ball back with a little over two minutes left. An apparent conversion into Patriot territory was wiped out by a holding penalty. With under 30 seconds left, they couldn’t convert a fourth and five from midfield as Southwest won 30-29.

Love ran for 85 yards on nine carries with one score. Dequavis Benjamin ran for 97 yards on 17 carries. Everett rushed for 71 yards on 12 carries plus threw for 149 yards, going 18 for 28. Tyrek Mack caught nine passes for 104 yards.

The Royals have an off week upcoming. They return to action September 20 at Washington County.
