There were several things different as BCHS took the mat for the first time Saturday afternoon at the Middle Georgia Cheer Classic. Seven seniors graduated from last year’s state champion squad. Two former rivals from AA had moved down to Class A, Division 1 in Dodge County and Vidalia.

Region 2A also changed. Swainsboro is gone, added were the cheer programs from Dodge and Washington Counties. At the competition, Dodge, Swainsboro, and Vidalia were among the eight teams competing along with the Royals.

A large crowd had made the short trip over. The familiar chant of “Let’s Go Royals!” could be heard as the squad prepared to enter the gym. They roared as BC was called the floor.

For a first competition, with several new faces on the mat, it was a solid start. They were energetic, their motions were good, jumps were good, tumbling was clean. One of the single base stunts came down a bit early, and one of the stunt groups didn’t execute their stunts because of coming down early.

Overall though, there was satisfaction with the day. Early competitions like this are for getting the jitters out and to see what needs to be improved on. There was no disappointment when a third place finish was announced.

BC returns to action September 28 in Dexter at the West Laurens Raider Rumble.
