A sweet day for BCHS Competition Cheerleaders.

BCHS went into Saturday's 12th Annual Sweet Onion Cheer Classic with a "nothing to lose" attittude. Though they'd gotten one person back from injury, a key flyer suffered a sprained ankle Thursday. With a routine that had to be reworked and scaled back at the last minute, the Royals were in Vidalia just to do the best they could.

Sometimes though having nothing to lose lets you gain the most. Bleckley had arguably its best-executed performance of the season in winning its second competition of the year as well as succeeding versus a team who had become a real foil for the Royals.

BC was the second of nine AA teams to compete. A large contingent of purple and gold family members and a few extra supporters were part of a packed H. Ralph Parsons Gym to cheer on Bleckley. As the team prepared to walk down the steps and take the mat, the familiar chant of "Bleckley County!" rang out.

With Jay Sean's "Down" blasting over the sound system, the Royals took the floor. What resulted was a great performance by BCHS. Every stunt stuck. Nothing came down early. The pyramid went up and all aspects of it stuck completely. Though BC had to remove some things, virtually all that was done went right.

An electricity swept through as the squad left the floor after their performance. Cheerleaders, fans, all felt his was a day that things "clicked" and went right. That feeling would be justified about an hour and a half later. It was then when the results were announced.

Fourth place, Toombs County. Third, Screven. Second place, Pierce County. Announcer Trin Hester then said the words which caused a huge feeling of joy and excitment over all those supporting BC.

"And first place. Double A champions, Bleckley County High School." The words "high school" were barely auidble over the screams of the squad and supporters. Not only had the Royals won, they broke a near two-year streak of finishes behind Screven County.

BCHS will have its last regular-season competition October 30 at the CheerDawg Classic hosted by Mary Persons High School. Start time is noon.
