Ellie Baldwin and Christin Taylor are 2 of 90 young people from across Georgia who has been hired as a camp counselor in the 2012 Georgia 4-H Summer Camping Program. Ellie has accepted an assignment to serve at Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton and Christin has accepted an assignment to serve at Wahsega 4-H Center near Dahlonega.

Arch Smith, State 4-H Leader and Director of Georgia 4-H, says it is young people like Ellie and Christin who have helped Georgia 4-H’s camping program gain a national reputation for excellence. “Georgia 4-H is fortunate to have one of the strongest summer camping programs in the United States. The ninety young people we hire to work as summer camp counselors are a very important part of our 4-H summer camping success,” according to Smith.

This will be Ellie’s third summer and Christin’s fifth summer as a Georgia 4-H camp counselor. About half of the 61 applicants seeking their first summer in the program and about 60 of the 90 applicants seeking to return for another summer as a 4-H camp counselor were offered employment in a highly competitive process.

Both Ellie and Christin have strong 4-H backgrounds. They were very active from 5th grade through 12th grade, competing in numerous activities and competitions.

Ellie is the daughter of Bill and Kathy Baldwin. Kathy served as 4-H Agent in Bleckley County for 24 years before accepting the position of Southeast District 4-H Program Development Coordinator this past fall. Christin is the daughter of Henry and Lisa Taylor.

While campers did not begin arriving until June, work began in January for Christin, Ellie and their colleagues. All 90 counselors gathered the last weekend in February at Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton to begin their training, with an emphasis on safety and positive youth development.

Training specific to Christin’s daily duties and responsibilities during the summer were held at Wahsega 4-H Center in March while Ellie’s specific training was held at Rock Eagle during the same time.
