So close: BCHS just misses top ten at state cheer finals.

After spending a nervous Friday last year at sectionals, the BCHS cheerleaders had a more relaxing time leading up to Saturday's state finals. They went over Thursday evening, watched sectionals, then practiced, and enjoyed time together.

Saturday morning was the final time. The Columbus Civic Center, a familiar place for Bleckley County. They've been there every year since state was moved to Columbus in 2002. Between those who spent Friday night there and others who drove over that day, a large group of supporters were on hand.

They cheered as announcer Jeff Halsey called BC to the floor. One early mistake, a stunt came down. As the flyer was caught, the person making the catch hit the mat. It was their only deduction in what was otherwise a good routine.

The lack of mistakes was even more impressive given how one squad member had been sick the night before. A look at final scores would reveal the five-point deduction. But it also cost Bleckley what would've been their first top ten finish since 2009. Some felt BCHS should've been in the top ten despite the deduction.

Still, this year's squad won region and kept a state appearance streak that began in 1997. That is something to cheer about.
