Bleckley FFA's officers traveled to Covington July 22-25 for a leadership retreat held at the FFA/FCCLA camp. The retreat was planned by advisors Doyle Floyd and Walt Parks.

Officers learned leadership skills, planned out the year's events, and participated in team-building activities. That included practicing opening ceremony speeches until they could be done perfectly two consecutive times, tackling the high ropes course, as well as designing the chapter T-Shirt, planning the calendar, and what community service projects the chapter would participate in.

Hadden Powell also traveled to Covington recently to attend FFA Floral Design Career Development Event training. The two-day training is designed to help members and advisors strengthen their floral design skills as well as build confidence in their own creative ability.

Training was done by members of the Georgia State Florist Association aided by donations from floral companies across the nation. The Floral Design CDE, which will be held in September, allows students to showcase their talents in a competitive environment by utilizing the principles and elements of design. Students use the principles of balance, proportion, scale, focal point, emphasis, rhythm, harmony, unity, and the technique of flower placement to create their designs.

Each student must also identify twenty-five flowers, plants or equipment from a list of seventy-five as well as take a test over the floral industry, safety and the proper techniques of floral design. The students make up to two floral arrangements during the area events in the time permitted. The top two students from each of the six area events will move on to compete on the state level in December at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

Afterwards, attendees enjoyed games of volleyball and corn hole. Officers served boiled peanuts along with lemonade and sweet tea to drink. To keep up with what's happening with Bleckley FFA, visit www.bleckleyffa.com
