From BleckleyProgress.com Community News Five years ago, Pre-K Week was launched and its support from government, business and community leaders continues to grow. This year, the Georgia School Board Association came onboard as a Pre-K Week partner, and Georgia Power, Synovus and Scholastic continue to be corporate sponsors. Other key supporters include Gov. Nathan Deal and First Lady Sandra Deal along with various other state officials.
Georgia Pre-K Week was celebrated across the state the week of Oct. 5-9. Bleckley Pre-K was fortunate to have two Georgia Power representatives visit their facility to help celebrate Pre-K Week. Walker Meadows, Key Account Support Representative and Bill Glisson, Education Coordinator visited Bleckley Pre-K Oct. 6 and read to the students. After reading to each of the classes, Mr. Walker and Mr. Glisson presented each student with the book, Savvy & Squander Saving Energy with Emerald and Dr. E, which is aligned to several Georgia Bright from the Start math, science and reading standards, a book bag, a box of crayons, and a coloring sheet. Bleckley Pre-K appreciates the support of Georgia Power, Mr. Meadows and Mr. Glisson and their commitment to educating young students about energy and energy conservation. To commemorate Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 4-10, 2015, the Cochran Fire Department visited Bleckley Pre-K. Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871. The theme for Fire Prevention Week 2015 is: “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep: Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm.” Fire Chief J.J. Spears and firemen Justin Baublitz and Derrick Warren of the Cochran-Bleckley Fire Department visited Bleckley Pre-K and taught students the importance of fire detectors and sounded one to familiarize students with the alarm sound. Additionally, they talked with students about what they should do to prevent fires as well as what to do in the event of a fire to maintain their own personal safety and the safety of others. Firemen taught the students to get out immediately, to STOP, DROP and ROLL if their clothes were burning, and to crawl out of a smoke filled room/home. During the visit, students were allowed to view different parts of the fire truck, see the firemen’s equipment, and their protective clothing. To provide children with further insight, Fireman Baublitz dressed in his firefighting attire to show the students what firemen may look like in the line of duty.
