Boys track wins region, girls finish second.

The BCHS track teams went into Thursday's 4-AA finals in position to bring home trophies with the girls in first and the boys in second. Though the girls would ultimately run out of events and see their lead vanish, the boys used a strong second day to dethrone four-time region champion Lamar County.

McKinely Cranford and Ellen Powell will both have a chance to make it to Albany in the 1600 meter run.


Lamar's girls trailed by six points. But they gained points in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles, events the girls didn't have anyone. They also had two teams in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. (There were no qaulifying races in those events for girls due to lack of teams.) Ultimately, the point score was 143 Lamar, 136 Bleckley.



Individual results from Thursday were as follows. Qualifying for sectionals were: Ellen Powell, first in the 800 and 1600 meter runs (four time champion in each.) Tori Deeson, third in the 800 meter run. McKinley Cranford, third in the 1600 meter run. Fellisa Young, second in 100 meter dash. Kyla Thomas, fourth in the 100 meter dash.

The 4x100 team of Powell, Leah Rogers, Thomas, and Young finished fourth in the 4x100. Thomas, Deeson, Rogers, and Powel finished second in the 4x400. Other results: Rogers was fifth in the 400, Thomas fifth in the 200.

A 25-point deficit against Lamar County faced the boys as they began Thursday. But they were able to get 34 points from the 800 and 3200, got 20 points from the two short distance races, a region title in the 4x100, and enough points from other areas to win 138 to 126.5



Qualifying for state sectionals Thursday were: Carl Ellis Corley, first in the 3200 meter run. Bronson Sanders, second in the 3200. Austin Cook first in the 800 meter run,. Anuj Patel, third in the 800. Nykeem Farrow, first in the 200 meter dash, second in the 100 meter dash.

The 4x100 team of Lequan Allen, Nykeem Farrow, Logan Pittman, and LaDarrick Vickers finished first. Pittman, Corley, Patel, and Clay Blanton finished third in the 4x400 meter relay. Other results. Blanton finished sixth in the 400 meter run, Pittman seventh.



Vickers was seventh in the 200 meter dash. Earl Marshall, fifth in the 110 hurdles, sixth in the 300 meter hurdles. Nick Mack, seventh in 110 hurdles. Jonah White, seventh in 300 meter hurdles.



Marshall, along with Demarcus Ross, Devante Mahogney and Torenio Davis finished fifth in the 4x100 relay. Cook, Vickers, C.J. Rich, and Dayton Cannon finished seventh in the 4x400 relay.

The boys team with coaches Shelly Cranford, John Stanley, Debbie Caldwell, and BCHS Principal Trey Belflower.


State sectionals will be April 30 at Ben Hill County Middle School. Start time is 10 am.
